In many ways the usefulness of an editor is fairly obvious.
Who picks up the spelling mistakes and corrects the grammar?
Who proof reads the final copy to ensure that it says exactly what it is supposed to say?
An editor. Precisely.
But an editor's work extends far beyond these fairly mundane tasks.
What more do editors do?
Editors work on a number of levels.
An editor will look at the whole of your information with an eye and a feel for how coherent and consistent it is.
Coherence means:
- Does it hang together?
- Does it make sense?
- Does it flow in a logical order?
- Does the information stay on track?
- Could it be presented in a better order so as to make more sense to the reader?
- Does it cover all the relevant bases?
- Are the key concepts followed up?
- Are the details adequately explained? , Are all the loose ends tied up?
- Can it be put more clearly and succinctly?
- With greater punch and impact?
- How could the information on the page be made more interesting and compelling to the reader?
- Are images needed to convey the full meaning of the words?
